Defining Success Metrics
How do you know if the eLearning produced was successful? Measuring the success of a course is essential to evaluate its effectiveness, identify areas for improvement, and make data-driven decisions. Here are some eLearning success metrics you can use to measure the success of a course:
- Course completion rate: The course completion rate measures the percentage of learners who complete the course. A high completion rate could indicate the course content was engaging and relevant to learners.
- Learner satisfaction: Learner satisfaction measures the degree of satisfaction or dissatisfaction that learners have with the course. You can gather learner feedback through surveys, ratings, and reviews to understand their experience and identify areas for improvement.
- Performance improvement: Performance improvement measures the extent to which learners have improved their skills or knowledge after completing the course. You can use assessments, quizzes, and other evaluation tools to measure learners’ performance and track their progress.
- Return on investment: Return on investment (ROI) measures the financial return of the course in relation to the cost of its development and delivery. You can calculate ROI by comparing the revenue generated from the course to the expenses associated with it.
- Engagement metrics: Engagement metrics measure learners’ engagement or interaction with the course content. You can use metrics such as page views, time spent, and completion rates of individual modules or lessons to identify the most engaging areas of the course and adjust accordingly. However, these could be skewed because the student could have walked away leaving their tab open.
- Referral rate: referral rate measures the percentage of learners who refer the course to others. A high referral rate indicates that the course content is valuable and engaging, and learners are willing to recommend it to others.
- Dropout rate: The drop-out rate measures the percentage of learners who drop out of the course before completing it. A high dropout rate may indicate that the course content is not meeting the expectations of learners or that the course is too difficult.

These are just a few eLearning success metrics you can use to determine the success of your course. A lot of times people can get stuck on the details such as color, personal tastes, and non-impactful edits, which leads to project delays. It’s better to create the first concepts, deliver them to a small group, assess the metrics, and make changes before delivering them to a larger group.
